Search Feature in the boards

I just thought of an idea for the boards. I wonder if there could be a search feature where you can just type in the words of the board topic you want to see, and then the computer will bring the page right up? Just a thought.

It would be a good idea, and I think a feature that brings up a list of board topics that already exist when you try to create a new topic would prevent duplicates.

Can't the Zone search engine be used for searching the boards? Perhaps the box should be added to each page.

The site search finds the key words from the boards and user profiles. Maybe have an option of just searching the boards.

There is a serch thing already but like person above says, maybe an option to only surch bords added to it. And I agree with the multyple post but some of the posts aren't red anymore and may not be as interesting as the newer ones. But maybe a page can come up to say something like "This post may have already been cirrated do you still want to corate this post?"

it should have one on the board page itself. that will prevent many of the duplicate post that refer to the exact topic.
another fitures should add is the limit posts a poster can made for a day. maybe it will be a good idea to limited to let say 5 or 10 for non premium and 20 for premium? that will help posters will seriously thing and compose before they post, instead of posting multiple post on a topic.

yea i don't agree with the limit thing but I do agree with the rest of the stuff stated above. also the site admins or whoever waches over the site and boards should also be able to murge/ delete duplicate posts that also would clen up the boards alot too and the database too making thesite run even faster

The posting limit has come up before... maybe it could exist as a restriction for standard members or something, I'm not sure. To the previous poster, the site admins and CL's can delete duplicate topics... in the case of the admins though, they don't. Merging isn't such a bad idea but it would probably be difficult to work out exactly how to code it... not that it would ever happen anyway. As to the original suggestion, it's a pretty good idea. The site search brings up a lot of stuff that's not rellivent to the boards. It could include a checkbox for whether to search topic titles or the actual content of the topics.

And while we're on crazy suggestions that will never happen, how about a minimum posting length? We already have a maximum of 8000 characters in a board post... how about a minimum of 100 characters or some other appropriate number? It would be a way to make sure people don't waist server space by posting pointlessly short posts such as "lol", "I agree" or "hmm".

The problem with the suggestions coming from down under, is that it would limit people's enjoyment of certain games on the boards.

Some games require very short responses, and people may wish to respond several times to who ever has posted above them in the game.

Some debates attract a big response. People may wish to respond to several new responses that are yet to be posted. If they are limited to 5 responses, that could limit some debates.

Can't you just use Google to do that now?go to google and type site: www.zonebbs.com and then whatever you are looking for in quotes.

i fancy the idea of minimum caractors posting, perhaps we should start with at least 50 instead of 100. that might allow users to post web link etc etc.
and for the game board, it should be totally remove. if people are so interested in playing games, they should be included under the games session, and leave the board alone.
look at the recent history of game board, there's only a hand full of people or less, who post there, and it is an absolute waste of space.
there's more contribution that zoners can made instead of wasting netspace, not only for zone, but for the whole internet too.

Which brings up another suggestion that has been discussed. Having board filters so you can choose what boards you want to be shown. There are some that I never look at, but have to go past them. I'm sure it's the same for most people here.

I've been on that one for a while too and am sure it would be easy to code... notice the dot dot dot...

Post 13 by season (the invisible soul) on Sunday, 01-Nov-2009 1:29:27

well, everything will be easy to code... if we have... the proper person who have time...to code them...

Wow, I didn't expectthis board to have so many posts. lol Well, if the site search already has where you can type in key words for the boards, there's no need for a search feature like that in the boards. Thanks to Jean for bringing that up.

To post 8: The game parlor itself is about as useless as single-word responses to start with so I suppose it'd be a bit unreasonable to impose the limit there. It wouldn't be difficult to apply the restriction to all categories except the game parlor.

Good idea, Michael. There's only one thing wrong with this idea: It has come up before, and guess what? Nothing became of it. Lol.

This would be a good idea, cause sometimes I just want a certain board, and when i go to the topic i have to go through lots of others before i find the one i want

Post 18 by illumination (Darkness is history.) on Saturday, 21-Nov-2009 9:45:57

But apparenty, Jean said that you can search the site for the board topic you want, which wouldn't be a problem. I don't really use it because I just look at the boards that are at the top of the page.

If i'm looking for a specific board or a board that contains certain keywords, I just use the site search function. In most cases, the board i'm looking for comes up on the first page of results. What you need to remember is that the site search function will only search pages that are visible to guests (members who are not logged in) which are mainly the boards or user profiles. So in most cases, it's rather easy to find a specific board providing you know part or all of it's title. Plus, if you know who created/posted in the topic, you can use the "board posts by a specific user" function. What I would like, however, is the ability to search graffiti boards; that would be cool!
